Supporting innovation and sustainability through European projects
EMBRC contributes to European and international projects through Horizon Europe, the European Commission's funding programme for research and innovation ; and Interreg, one of the key instruments of the European Union for finding innovative and sustainable solutions to face regional development challenges.
Diverse in scope and country involvement, these projects aim to enhance EMBRC activities, notably strengthen collaboration with similar European organisations ('research infrastructures'), implement good practices for the management of marine living resources, provide high-level research services to support science and boost the blue economy to tackle global societal challenges.
These projects provide an opportunity to develop joint activities as well as to enhance knowledge-sharing in view of optimising scientific research in Europe and beyond.

PROJECT
The EU-funded IMAGINE project is developing advanced microscopy technology for studying biological samples. IMAGINE will use these technologies to tackle societal challenges in Europe's seas and make them accessible to the life science community through validation and training.

DTO-BioFlow, part of Horizon Europe Mission, drives ocean biodiversity preservation through the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO). By unlocking dormant data and integrating new AI-processed streams, it enhances DTO's biological component, shaping evidence-based policies for a thriving marine ecosystem.

DOORS, an EU-funded initiative, aligns with the Black Sea Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) to address challenges and foster Blue Growth in this unique marine basin. By harmonizing research, supporting start-ups, and shaping policy, DOORS aims to transform obstacles into opportunities, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for the Black Sea region.

CanServ, an EU-funded project under Horizon Europe, delivers cutting-edge, tailored oncology services across the cancer spectrum. By offering a comprehensive portfolio to scientists across EU and associated countries, it accelerates innovation for the benefit of cancer patients worldwide.

The EU-funded BlueRemediomics project aims to unlock the vast potential of marine microbiomes for sustainable ecosystem services and biodiscovery. Using advanced technologies, it aims to understand the composition, interactions, and functions of marine microbes. BlueRemediomics will develop bioinformatics platforms, innovative culturomics, and high-throughput screening tools to identify natural products. It promotes responsible exploitation, equitable access, and ocean literacy while fostering aquaculture and ecosystem health.

Blue-Cloud 2026 advances marine research with FAIR & open data, analytical services, and virtual labs for EU seas. It supports Green Deal objectives, EU Missions, and UN SDGs, enhancing the Digital Twin Ocean. Over 42 months, it expands its ecosystem, integrating diverse datasets and infrastructures.

BIOcean5D is a collaborative effort among European institutions to explore marine biodiversity comprehensively. With cutting-edge technologies and extensive research, it aims to understand and preserve marine ecosystems amidst rapid changes in the Anthropocene era. This initiative will generate valuable data, inform ecological theories, develop indicators of ecosystem health, and foster sustainable management of oceans.

ANERIS, funded by the EU, designs Operational Marine Biology to systematically measure ocean life. It combines advanced tools like genomics, bio-optics, and participatory sciences. Through innovation and collaboration, it supports academia, industry, governments, civil society, and research infrastructures, promising enhanced observational systems and innovative life-sensing technologies.

eDNAqua-Plan seeks to gather information on aquatic monitoring projects, assessing standardization efforts, and evaluating the feasibility of creating a FAIR-based digital ecosystem for eDNA repositories and a dynamic species reference library to support future biodiversity monitoring initiatives in marine and freshwater ecosystems.

MARCO-BOLO (MBO) aims to structure and strengthen European coastal and marine biodiversity observation capabilities, linking them to global efforts to understand and restore ocean health.

The main goal of FAIR-EASE is to enhance the effectiveness of distributed and integrated services for observing and modeling the Earth system, environment, and biodiversity. This is achieved by advancing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of its various components through collaboration with user communities in Europe.

The EU-funded Future project aims to strengthen coordination and collaboration among European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs). It supports networking, events, training, and policy engagement to enhance ERICs' role and identity, fostering best practices and addressing shared challenges in research infrastructure management.

The EU-funded AtlantECO project aims to develop and apply a novel, unifying framework that provides knowledge-based resources for a better understanding and management of the Atlantic Ocean and its ecosystem services. Focus areas include: microbiomes, plastic and the plastisphere, and seascape connectivity.

IMBRSea is a joint master program organised by 10 leading European universities in the field of marine sciences, supported by EMBRC. IMBRSea prepares students for the rapidly evolving demands of the blue bio-economy and research on the sustainable use of marine biological resources.

EBB will facilitate sustainable access to Atlantic marine biodiversity, its associated data, and extractable products for local and international academia and industry users.

EOSC-Life brings together the 13 life science research infrastructures (LS RIs) to create an open collaborative space for digital biology. It is a joint response to the challenge of analysing and reusing the prodigious amounts of data produced by life sciences.
ENVRIPlus: Environmental Research Infrastructures Providing Shared Solutions for Science and Society
PROJECT
ENVRIplus is a Horizon 2020 project bringing together environmental and earth system research infrastructures (RIs), projects and networks together with technical specialist partners to create a more coherent, interdisciplinary and interoperable cluster of environmental RIs across Europe.

EMBRIC strives to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and innovation from marine bio-resources, while promoting new applications derived from marine organisms in fields such as drug discovery, novel foods and food ingredients, aquaculture selective breeding, bioremediation, cosmetics and bioenergy.

CORBEL aimed to establish shared services between the ESFRI Biological and Medical Science Research Infrastructures (BMS RIs) to support enhanced European research. This was achieved through the provision of joint services and coordinated ‘user access’ to a range of advanced technology platforms.

ASSEMBLE Plus is a Horizon 2020-funded project which brings together 32 marine stations and institutes. Coordinated by EMBRC, the project provides research and networking opportunities to scientists in Europe and beyond to enhance marine biology research.

The ERIC Forum Implementation Project is a Horizon 2020 project which brings together 20 established European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs) and 3 ERICs in preparation to strengthen their coordination and enhance their collaborations. The strategic approach of the ERIC Forum will contribute to address critical challenges and develop best practices.
