Engagement for Sustainable Industry

Strong industrial engagement is a key part of EMBRC’s work to accelerate a knowledge-based economy, advance scientific innovation, and encourage the sustainable use of marine biological resources. Our pan-European network helps industry partners speed up the development of discoveries including products and technologies that support a fast, efficient transition towards a more sustainable Blue Economy.

The value of a sustainable Blue Economy

The World Bank defines the Blue Economy as the “sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and ecosystem health.” According to the Blue Bioeconomy Report 2023, Europe’s marine living resources sector generates more than €22.0 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) and employs over 543,000 people.

SCIENCE-BASED
For Blue Economy activities to be sustainable, they must be based on robust science.
VISION

EMBRC’s Industrial Vision

EMBRC’s three-year Industrial Engagement Strategy aims to drive progress in Blue Economy sectors across Europe through stronger industry engagement by:

  • Integrating our resources and expertise into the innovation ecosystem to encourage regional collaboration and innovation across industries
  • Increasing industry use of our services, resources and expertise for economic growth by improving the visibility of our offering

Measuring and reporting on EMBRC’s industrial engagement to support informed decision-making and future growth.

Why Industry Engagement is Important

The private sector plays an important role in finding innovative solutions to speed up the sustainable development of the Blue Bioeconomy. This includes aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, and renewable energy as well as economic activities using renewable marine biological resources; for example, for food additives, animal feeds, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

As well as finding ways to mitigate climate-related issues and protect and restore ecosystems, R&D in these sectors can create new jobs, boost economic growth, support sustainable food production and help Europe position itself as a climate leader.

How EMBRC is Working with Industry to Boost the Blue Bioeconomy

mesocosom norway

EMBRC aims to accelerate innovation by providing an open ecosystem for knowledge exchange, enabling industry partners to co-develop cutting-edge technologies, test prototypes and advance blue growth across Europe. EMBRC’s support enables industry partners to ensure their innovations are science-based and reduce the risk involved in developing new technologies. We offer services, resources, training and expertise to boost innovation and speed up discoveries in three key emerging industry areas: marine aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and ocean observation.

We can provide access to multidisciplinary experts to help industry stakeholders develop their proof of concept and experimental designs, co-develop new technologies, and increase their innovation’s Technology Readiness Level. We join forces with industry to overcome current technological barriers and find innovative solutions.

Private sector researchers can use our catalogue of marine biological resources, portfolio of technological platforms and extensive datasets to develop cutting edge-technologies, test prototypes and create automated systems to improve sampling and data analysis. We can facilitate genomic and chemical analysis, bioactive tests, and access to facilities for up-scaling production.

EMBRC is also creating a robust network of Core Facilities, dedicated to advancing high-impact, reproducible research. This approach enables the creation of standardised procedures, fosters multi-disciplinary networking and strengthens ties between EMBRC and private sector stakeholders.

By working in collaboration with EMBRC, industry scientists from Europe and beyond can tap into our consolidated EU network of top-notch experts and facilities to overcome
