EMBRC-IT was established as Joint research Unit (JRU) on 6 June 2016 as a Joint Research Unit (JRU). It includes 16 partners: 

  • the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (SZN) as lead partner, hosting the national node office
     
  • 8 universities:

    • the University of Milano “Bicocca” (UNIMIB)
    • the Marche Polytechnic University (UNIVPM)
    • the University of Torino (UNITO)
    • the University of Messina (UNIME)
    • the University of Cagliari (UNICA)
    • the University of Tuscia (UNITUS)
    • the University of Ferrara (UNIFE)
       
  • 5 public research institutes
    • the National Research Council (CNR)
    • the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS)
    • the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA)
    • the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA)
    • the Zooprophylactic Experimental Institute of Piemonte, Liguria & Valle d’Aosta (IZSPLV)
       
  • The Think Tank “Technology Cluster Blue Italian Growth (CTN-BIG)” which aims at developing and empowering the Italian Blue Economy, linking the Italian node to industries. 
     
  • The National Inter-University Consortium for Marine Sciences (CoNISMa) which promotes and coordinates research and scientific activities and their applications in the field of Marine Sciences among 35 associated universities.

EMBRC-IT provides access to a wide array of unique ecosystems such as the  access to ecosystems (the volcanic CO2 vents in the Gulf of Naples, which constitutes natural experimental sites for ocean acidification studies, the lagoon systems of Venice and Lesina, and the salt marshes in Sicily and Sardinia, the coral reefs of the Maldivian MaRHE Center of UNIMIB) ; biobanks and culture collections (the Marine Fungi collection of the University of Torino; the CosMi Phytoplankton collection of the OGS) and advanced technological platforms (the Bioprospecting screening platform BlueProsp and the Molecular Biology Facility CSAM of SZN the Fish Farm and Chemical Analyses LabSTREAM of UNIME, the Structural Biology facility of Università del Salento, associated via CoNISMa).
