EMBRC ITALY

Who is EMBRC Italy?

EMBRC Italy is the Italian node of EMBRC – a pan-European research infrastructure made up of a network of marine stations and research organisation across Europe.

Italy became an EMBRC member as a Joint Research Unit in June 2016. Through its 16 partners, it can offer researchers access to 99 marine services. EMBRC Italy can support researchers through access to ecosystems, biobanks and culture collection, and advanced technological platforms as well as building relationships with industry.

The Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (SZN) is the lead partner of the Italian node and also home to EMBRC Italy’s national office.

How EMBRC Italy can support researchers

Italy is a beautiful country with a wide range of unique ecosystems – from the volcanic CO2 vents in the Gulf of Naples to the lagoon systems of Venice and Lesina, and the salt marshes in Sicily and Sardinia. Through EMBRC Italy, researchers can access these ecosystems – as well as Maldivian coral reefs, facilitated by the MaRHE Centre of UNIMIB – to study their biodiversity.

The Marine Organism Taxonomy (MOTax) Unit at SZN is a specialised core facility for the taxonomy and identification of various groups of marine organisms. Merging traditional morphological approaches and modern technologies, MOTax provides a wide range of services including species-level identification and molecular characterisation of plankton, biomass measurement and the isolation of single cells for the cultivation of microalgal strains.

EMBRC Italy can also facilitate the use of biobanks and culture collections, such as the Marine Fungi collection of the University of Torino; the CosMi Phytoplankton collection of the OGS. Advanced technological platforms are also available. These include the Bioprospecting screening platform BlueProsp and the Molecular Biology Facility CSAM of SZN the Fish Farm and Chemical Analyses LabSTREAM of UNIME, and the Structural Biology facility of Università del Salento, associated with CoNISMa.

Together, these partners have a huge depth and breadth of expertise across the spectrum of marine biological observation. For example, CoNISMa promotes and coordinates marine science research and activities among 35 associated universities. As well as scientific knowledge and experience, the CTN-BIG think tank is helping to strengthen the link between researchers and industry as part of its mission to develop the Italian Blue Economy.
