EMBRC PORTUGAL

What is EMBRC Portugal ?

EMBRC Portugal is the Portuguese node of EMBRC – a pan-European research infrastructure made up of a network of research organisations and marine stations across Europe that accelerates marine biology and ecology research through its knowledge, expertise, and services.

Portugal joined EMBRC in 2013. Through its partners, it can offer researchers access to four marine sites. EMBRC Portugal can support researchers through privileged access to a range of unique marine ecosystems, experimental aquarium facilities, well-equipped labs, culture collections and marine model organisms.

How EMBRC Portugal supports researchers

With three marine research centres in the Southwestern corner of Europe (Faro, Coimbra and Porto) and a fourth centre in the middle of the North Atlantic (Horta, Azores), EMBRC Portugal provides privileged access to a range of unique marine ecosystems. These four centres also include several experimental aquarium facilities, well-equipped labs with the latest technologies and specific marine culture collections and marine model organisms that may be accessed through EMBRC Portugal

Its Ramalhete Marine Station, in southern Portugal, is an aquarium facility with 500 m² of indoor tank facilities, isolated and environmentally controlled rooms for behaviour studies, wet and dry laboratories, a 900 m² outdoor area for larger volume tanks and 4 hectares of surrounding salt pan and marsh system habitats. This facility can support experiments in several marine research areas, including nutrition, behaviour and physiology studies.

Ramalhete is particularly suited for experimentation with marine organisms, including fish, macroalgae, and bivalves. It offers tailored experimental setups with tanks of various sizes  – from 100L to 9000L – supplied with filtered flow-through natural sea water from Ria Formosa. These allow for control of temperature, photoperiod, light intensity and salinity. There are three levels of CO2 available for simulating ocean acidification scenarios.
