VLIZ Awards

Each year, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), Partner of the Belgian Node of EMBRC, organizes its marine scientific prizes. Discover here what prizes you qualify for:

1. The VLIZ Communication Award 2018 (deadline 5 February 2018)

The VLIZ Communication Award was launched in 2015 in order to assist young marine scientists or engineers in communicating their work. The selected laureate benefits from assistance by the VLIZ Communication department in the course of the following year.

If you think you are entitled to receive this personal communication coaching in 2018, send your motivation letter – according to the conditions listed on the VLIZ-website – prior to 5 February 2018 to info@vliz.be.

2. The VLIZ Master Thesis Awards 2017 (deadline 18 December 2017)

Every year VLIZ awards two prizes for theses written at a Flemish university or college, or written by a Flemish researcher at a non-Flemish institution. Both fundamental and applied research in all branches of marine sciences is taken into consideration.

The prizes amount to 500 EUR each and are reserved to young researchers who graduated from a Flemish university or college, or to Flemish young researchers who graduated from a non-Flemish university or college (graduation in the past two years).

3. New: the VLIZ Bachelor Thesis Award 2017 (deadline 18 December 2017)

Every year VLIZ awards a prize for a bachelor thesis written at a Flemish university or college, or for a bachelor thesis written by a Flemish student at an international university or college. Both fundamental and applied research in all branches of marine sciences is taken into consideration.

The prize amounts to EUR 500 and is reserved for young researchers who have been graduated for no more than two years at a Flemish university or university college or for a bachelor thesis written by a Flemish student at non-Flemish university or college.

4. The Annual VLIZ North Sea Award 2017 (deadline 18 December 2017)

Every year VLIZ awards a prize at the VLIZ Marine Science Day to promote innovative fundamental or applied research. The VLIZ North Sea Award is presented annually to a researcher (or research group) active and residing in a country by the North Sea.

The prize amounts to 1 000 EUR and is indivisible. The prize is aimed at rewarding recent and original scientific work that contributes to the innovative fundamental and applied research on the structure, operation and sustainable management of the ecosystem of the North Sea, with special attention to the shallow coastal areas and estuaries of the Southern Bight and the English Channel. The contribution’s level has to be post-graduate or post-doctoral.
