Scottish – German science partnership launches post-Brexit grant scheme

On the day the UK officially leaves the European Union, Scotland’s umbrella organisation for geosciences has announced a new research exchange scheme in order to maintain links with German colleagues. The new programme aims to strengthen co-operation between the geoscience powerhouses of The Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES) and Geoverbund ABC/J. Grants will be awarded to researchers from the respective countries on a competitive basis to initiate and enhance collaboration in all aspects of geoscience and earth systems science.

SAGES Director Professor Mark Inall (pictured), who is based at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban, said: “Launching this scheme today underlines a commitment to grow our longstanding and highly valued international relationships between leading research groups in Scotland and Germany.”

Professor Harry Vereecken, Director of Geoverbund ABC/J said: “The 31st January 2020 is an incisive day for Europe, as the UK is leaving the EU. We are delighted that our geoscience networks Geoverbund ABC/J (located in Germany) and SAGES (located in Scotland) have found an uncomplicated way to continue to further strengthen their research cooperation.” Application portals will open on SAGES and Geoverbund web pages next week.
